December 15 Christmas Potluck with Genealogical Society

The Historical Society of Hopkins County will hold its annual Christmas Potluck jointly with the Hopkins County Genealogical Society
on Thursday December 15, 2011 at the US Bank building meeting room. Please contact either society to make reservations and volunteer
to bring specific food items. 2012 Officers for both groups will be installed and there will be a special program in addition to the fine food and
fellowship.

The Historical Society of Hopkins County will host a Book-Signing on Thursday, November 10 from 1-3 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. for the new book Postcard History Series:  Hopkins County compiled by Lisa D. Piper and the Historical Society of Hopkins County and published by Arcadia Publishing.  The book will be available for $21.99 and consists of decades-old photos of the fantastic history of Hopkins County including Dawson Springs, Earlington, Hanson,Madisonville, Nebo, Mortons Gap and St. Charles.  Showcased are glimpses of the coal mining industry, downtown memories, institutions, and leisure activities.  Lisa Piper will be available to autograph each book.

In addition, Historical Society members will be available to interested patrons who would like to have a tour of the Historical Society Museum and Log Cabin and get a chance to see the 1911 Buick.  Make plans now to attend – November 10 1-3 p.m. or 5-7 p.m. for the Postcard History Series:  Hopkins County Book-Signing at 107 Union Street-Madisonville, KY.  For more information, call 270-821-3986 from 12-4 p.m

Historical Society of Hopkins County will meet Thursday July 14 at 7 pm for a short business meeting.  Then members will be invited to walk across and down the street to the Norman/Parrott house – former Dempsey House– at 124 Union Street for a brief tour.

Plan ahead to attend “I Love Hanson Days” July 15 & 16,  and perhaps volunteer as the Historical Society will have a booth to sell books.

August 25 will be a joint meeting with the Genealogical Society of Hopkins County and it will feature guest speaker Justice Bill Cunningham, author of  The Castle and several other Kentucky books.

Facebook Page – You Know You’re from Madisonville if…

A really great community page on facebook is getting a lot of traffic and comments titled… “You know you’re from Madisonville if…”

You can seach it on facebook and read the conversations including just recently one on “Snow Mountain” across from WFMW…

Certain landmark business are a frequent topic…

It’s a wonderful source for the history of Madisonville as remembered by its residence both here now and moved away.

The info should be copied and stored for future reference (I know, Richard why dont you check on doing that)…

June 9th Meeting… House & Garden Field Trip!

The THURSDAY June 9th meeting of the Historical Society of Hopkins County will include a field trip to the Larry and Rita McWilliams home in Earlington, KY.

Be at the Historical Society building on Union Street by 6 PM (an hour earlier than normal, so we can get back to Madisonville before nightfall)… as a quick business meeting will proceed carpooling to Earlington for a guided tour of the McWilliams historic home.

Guest are invited… as we hope you will become a member of the Society!

Louise Utley Retirement

In May at the Hopkins County Government Center a reception for Louise Utley was hosted by Hopkins County Judge Executive Donnie Carroll.

The open house reception honored Louise for her years of service to Hopkins County and the Historical Society before her move to Owensboro.

The Historical Society also honored her with a small gift and a big round of applause at her final meeting as Treasure of the Historical Society meeting in May.
